Images of sunflowers
evoke thoughts of cart wheel sized yellow flowers on monster stalks
that tower over the garden. Sunflowers can indeed be giants among
their floral "peers". The tallest recorded sunflower stood
over 25 feet high! There are many interesting facts that can be found
about sunflowers when you do a search on the Internet.
Sunflowers aren't grown for
their size alone. Most sunflowers are grown for consumption, either
as seeds, which are a popular snack for both people and birds, or
processed into oil that is low in saturated fat and has a light,
pleasing flavor.
Of course, sunflowers are also grown
simply for the beauty of their blooms. In addition to the familiar
noonday yellow, plant breeders have created sunflowers in sunset
shades of red and gold. Ornamental sunflowers may produce a dozen
or more flowers on branching stems with heights that are sometimes
barely three feet tall. These shorter varieties can be found online
in beautiful arrangements or sold individually. At least with ornamental
sunflowers, you can have an arrangement of them in your home without
having to raise the ceiling to accommodate it!
