If your vacation
plans include a long drive with children this summer, red flowers
just may help to save your sanity! For children who are accustomed
to surfing the Internet, spending several hours in the confines of
an automobile can be virtual torture! Especially when the VCR quits
and the electronic game batteries die. Then it's up to you to keep
them entertained and that's where the red flowers come in.
Before you leave home, make a list
of objects that you expect to see along the road. A school bus,
a herd of cows, a US flag, a garden of red flowers, and so
on. Make the list as long as you can. You will be surprised how
many red flowers you see as compared to other flower colors.
At the first cry of "I'm bored!"
you can whip out the list and start the "Find It" game.
Name five objects and see who finds all five first. Older children
can learn a little by being asked about what they see. "What
do you call those red flowers?" If they don't know the answer,
you can look it up on the Internet together when you get home. When
you find the name of the red flowers, you can shop online for seeds
or bulbs and plant your own garden of red flowers to remind you
of the fun that you had on your vacation.
